"Behold a bard who has not chanted yet. But he will sing soon - and by the end of his song he will know the starry wisdom" (trans Matthews)
"THE SONG OF TALIESIN'"
BY JOHN MATTHEWS
PERFORMED BY 'SPINTALE"
"Spintale" are Jem Dick and Steve Gladwin, who have collaborated on this first recording at "Resonance Studios" in Langport, Somerset. It is our intention to make the medium of "aural" storytelling an exciting and vital one; using as many resources as possible to create as near to the experience of a live event as a recording can manage. This incorporates not just the voice in a whole variety, but a variety of instruments, and recording effects.
The Song of Taliesin was first produced at Bridwater Arts Centre, Somerset in June 2000 where it was introduced by the author John Matthews, in a production performed by Steve Gladwin, directed by Stuart Croskell, and with live percusiion by Mark Bradbury of "Marcata Volta".
Since then it has gone through many changes and employed the services of several fine harpers, culminating in a new version as "Caught Between Worlds" which expanded the role of the goddess in Act Two for Celia Gladwin.
Jem and Steve met on the same storytelling retreat where Steve and Celia had previously met and decided to produce this project as a memorial to her and to launch "Spintale" as an exciting new inititative and with the full blessing and support of John and Caitlin Matthews.
| | This recording of "The Song of Talesin" is everything we have
dreamed it would be and we are truly excited about it. It is a
beautifully packaged double CD which also includes Steve's performance
of Taliesin's most famous poem, the Cad Goddeu, (Battle of the Trees)
and original music by Jem Dick and Sharon Jacksties. It employs the use
of a variety of instruments both ancient and wonderful including deer
bone flute, swan bone flute, osseophone, bull horn, cedar wood flute,
ocean harp, as well as fiddle and guitar. And it includes some very
strange bards indeed.
"Spintale" is a collaboration between "Resonance Studios" and "Grove of Seven". Look out for details of more productions in the future or e mail Steve on gwern50@swanfall.co.uk
